Dads can teach us how to tie our shoes, ride a bike, and drive a car. If we’re lucky, our fathers play an important role in many of the milestones of our lives, starting in childhood. But all too often, when it comes to menstrual health and development, a father’s place can become a little less clear. There may be embarrassment, shame, or confusion on both sides – and this can lead to a breakdown in important communication between a daughter and the invaluable support that only her father can provide. As young girls begin to develop, they may start to pull away or naturally try to hide these changes from their dads. The truth is, a dad’s role in this stage is just as important as remembering to put on her helmet before he sends her off on her bike. When a father participates in this formative stage of his daughter’s life, instead of letting her mom handle it, this signifies to the daughter that he accepts her, and will love her as she grows and changes. Because, listen up, dad: this is about way more than momentary discomfort. This is about arming your daughter with the confidence she needs to take on the world, knowing you’ve got her back. And that type of confidence? It only comes with massive amounts of open communication, love, and support. READ MORE… »
Have you heard the saying, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?” Well if my mom was old and a dog (she’d kill me if I actually compared her to that), I would definitely be able to claim this as a true fact.
Why?
Because after almost a full menstrual lifetime of using tampons I got my mom to not only try, but to fall in love with menstrual cups! Since my own menstrual cup journey happened nearly at the same time, I thought it would be helpful to hear a brief backstory…

As women, it is so important that we share our stories out loud. So often, we let our busy schedules, our lives, or even our shame separate us from other people. Let’s put a stop to the fear that keeps us from sharing. We’re here to tell you:

Nutritional Tips for your Menstrual Cycle

I’m here to help women with hormonal dysfunction who are living in a state of overwhelm and anxiety to live harmoniously with the rhythms of their bodies. I do this so these women can stand in their power and use self-love as a catalyst for lasting change and Happy Hormones.

Listen, I’ve been through it all.

When I started nutrition school at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition, I was on Cloud 9. I changed my diet up big time (who knew vegetarianism wasn’t going to be popular!) and studied hard. READ MORE… »

Continuing with this month’s theme of making natural choices for our bodies, this week we’re talking about how to harness our innate connection to nature, and turn that energy into serious period-power. When we connect with our body and its natural rhythms, we gain a new level of understanding, acceptance, and even comfort with ourselves. You have the power to rethink the way you look at your period – and that important  shift can work wonders for your physical and mental well-being.

No matter how much we embrace our bodies, sometimes having your period can seriously suck. PMS can make your skin freak out.  Cramps can distract you from your daily activities.  And the other plethora of menstrual side effects can make a few days of your cycle less than desirable. But no matter how uncomfortable menstruation is, it is a not-so-subtle reminder for us to harness the moon’s innate potential. Plus, it is a perfect time to either start or get back into your yoga practice.

The day before I got my period I noticed a small brown stain in my pantyliner. I shrugged it off thinking it was probably just the light playing tricks on my eyes.

The next day I was talking to my friends about periods and I felt squirmish as my undies felt more wet than usual. After the end of the period I went to the bathroom thinking it was just extra discharge. Then I saw the brown streak and flipped. It was a rusty brown red color and it covered my entire crotch. I stared at it for like 5 minutes and my friend came in to check in on me. She found out laughed and handed me a pad.

My mom picked me up early that day and I stayed home for 5 days. Weirdly, my first period only lasted for like 2 days. So not too dramatic I guess. Great thing is that I don’t get cramps I just get moody and hungry around that time of the month. READ MORE… »
